Fue denominado así, después de una Expedición del USAS en el año 1940, por el capitán William H. Smyley, del buque cazador de focas "Ohio" en 1841-1842, que recobró un termógrafo dejado en caleta Péndulo, isla Decepción, por la Expedición Británica de Henry Foster en el año 1829. Cabo situado en el extremo NW de la isla más occidental de las tres que separan el canal Jorge VI del canal Carroll. Marca el extremo S de la boca occidental del canal Jorge VI.
