El nombre corresponde al apellido del teniente 1º Federico Corthorn, aviador naval y piloto del helicóptero del AP. "Piloto Pardo" de la Armada de Chile, quien participó en el rescate de los integrantes de las bases antárticas de Chile, Argentina y Gran Bretaña, durante la erupción en la isla Decepción, en diciembre de 1967. Pequeña caleta, de no más de 3 cables de boca, que se ubica a aproximadamente 2 millas al NE del cabo Errera, extremo SW de la isla Wiencke, sobre el canal Peltier, archipiélago de Palmer.
