La isla fue denominada por el Dr. Otto Nordenskjöld, comandante de la Expedición Sueca de los años 1901-1904, aparentemente por el barco "Vega" usado por su tío, Barón A. E. Nordenskjöld, quien fue el primero que pasó por el paso Nordeste en los años 1878-1879. Mide 17 millas de largo de E a W por 6 de ancho, es la más al N del grupo de las islas Ross y está situada al W del golfo Erebus y Terror. Está separada de la isla Ross por el canal Sidney Herbet y a su vez de la costa E de la península Luis Felipe por el canal Príncipe Gustavo. Sus costas están constituidas en su mayor parte por altos acantilados de piedra descubierta de 150 a 500 mts. de elevación mientras que hacia el interior cubre la isla, un manto de hielo y nieve parejo que se eleva a 665 mts.
