Descubierto en el año 1909 por la Expedición del Dr. Jean B. Charcot. El nombre fue dado en el año 1948 por hidrógrafos británicos en honor a Julio Verne, autor de "Veinte mil leguas de viaje submarino". Monte de 1.645 metros, principal elevación de la "Pourquois-Pas" y que se alza en la parte SE de ella, 6,5 millas al de cabo Bongrain, en el rincón NE de bahía Margarita en la costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
