El estrecho fue determinado por vuelos exploradores, por los miembros de la Base Este de Estados Unidos, en noviembre y diciembre de 1940 y se denominó por la expedición al mando de Sir Hubert Wilkins quien en 1929 probó por primera vez que la tierra de Charcot era una isla y quien por consiguiente descubrió este estrecho en forma indirecta. Estrecho que separa la isla Charcot de isla Alejandro I, y se encuentra en su totalidad cubierto por un campo de hielo. Su entrada N se cierra por la barrera de hielos, la cual avanza y retrocede según las condiciones glaciológicas.
