The area explored by the two Dornier flying boats 'Boreas' and 'Passat'; the surveyed area ranges from about 15° W to 15°E and from the coastline to about 74° S of which large parts were photogrammetrically covered, Neuschwabenland, Dronning Maud Land. Named during German Antarctic Expedition 1938/39 ('Neuschwabenland-Expedition') under Alfred Ritscher.
The discovered land was named 'Neuschwabenland' referring to the expedition vessel 'Schwabenland'; Schwaben is a large region in S Germany.
