The ice stream (Norwegian name Pencksökket) has its origin SW of Kirwanveggen in the high plains of Ritscherflya, passing Neumayersteilwand in the E and Spießgipfel in the W before confluencing with Jutulstraumen, Ritscherhochland, Maudheimvidda, Neuschwabenland, Dronning Maud Land. Discovered during German Antarctic Expedition 1938/39 ('Neuschwabenland-Expedition') under Alfred Ritscher.
Albrecht Penck (1858-1945), German geographer and geologist; detecting and proving the triple glaciation of Middle Europe; in 1891 he called for the production of a World Map Series at 1.000.000 scale.
