Narrative

A small cove of variable extent at the outflow of Schweitzergletscher, Lerchenfeldgletscher and Penckgletscher flowing into Herzog-Ernst-Bucht, Prinzregent-Luitpold-Land, Coats Land, Weddell Sea; it is more an inlet or cove than a bay. Discovered during Deutsche Antarktische Expedition 1911/12 under Wilhelm Filchner. The name Vahselbucht (English name Vahsel Bay) is often wrongly used for the large bay Herzog-Ernst-Bucht.

Named For

Richard Vahsel (1868-1912), Captain of the erxpedition vessel 'Deutschland'; died during the expedition on 1912-AUG-08 at 10 a.m.
