off NE coast of Adelaide Island in entrance of Buchanan Passage, was photographed from the air by RARE, 1947-48, and by FIDASE, 1956-57, and surveyed from the ground by FIDS from "Detaille Island" in 1958; in association with the names of glaciologists grouped in this area, named after René Koechlin (1866-1951), Swiss civil engineer, glaciologist and author of Les glaciers et leur méchanisme (Lausanne, 1944) (APC, 1960, p.5; BA, 1961, p.5; BAS 250P sheet SQ 19-20/10, 1-DOS 1979).
