A large glacier flowing north to the head of Lützow-Holmbukta. The northernmost part of the glacier was first recognized as an ice-covered fjord and mapped by the name of Instefjorden by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936-37. The JARE of 1957 found existence of a large glacier in the area, and named Shirase Hyôga after Nobu Shirase, leader of the first Japanese Antarctic expedition of 1911-12.
