A massive mountain, the highest and largest in the Hughes Range, and forming its southern end, rising to an elevation of 4255m, to the south-east of the head fo the Canyon Glacier. Discovered and photographed by Rear-Admiral Richard E Byrd on the Baselaying Flight of 18 November 1929, and surveyed by A P Crary in 1957-58. Named by Crary for Dr Joseph Kaplan, Chairman of the US National Committee for IGY in 1957-60.
