Narrative

A prominent inlet, about 20 miles deep and 12 miles wide, immediately south of Cape Maude and 15 miles north of the Beardmore Glacier, into which two large glaciers fall from the Bowden Névé. Named by the NZGSAE, 1959-60, after R W Richards, one of the members of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-17 Ross Sea Party, who was a prominent member of the sledging paty which laid depots as far south as Mount Hope for Shackton's proposed Trans-Antarctic Crossing which never eventuated. Richards was awarded the Albert Medal for his work in this expedition.
