A vast ice shelf, to a large extent grounded, between Ross Island and King Edward VII Land, and occupying the entire southern part of the Ross Sea embayment and ending seaward in a cliffed ice front about 400 miles long. Discovered on 28 January 1841 by Ross for whom it is named. Ross mapped the ice front eastward to 160°00' W.
