This name originates from New Zealand. It is part of the New Zealand Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.

An island, approximately 28km long in a north-south direction and up to 16km wide at its southern end, protruding through the Ross Ice Shelf close to Ross Island. The island is 2km east of Black Island, across white Strait. It has several craters and the highest point is Mount Nipha at 762m.
Discovered by the British National Antarctic Expedition (Discovery Expedition, BrNAE), 1901-04, and named by Scott in 1902 because of the mantle of snow which covers it. Not Hvit Oen (Norwegian) or Weisse Insel (German).
