An irregularly-shaped island, 12.5 mi long in an E-W direction, being the easternmost of the South Orkney Islands. Discovered in December 1821 in the course of the joint cruise by Capt. George Powell, British sealer, and Capt. Nathaniel Palmer, American sealer. R.H. Laurie, Chartseller to the Admiralty, published a chart of the South Shetland Islands, South Orkney Islands, and the NE end of the Antarctic Peninsula on Nov. 1, 1822, based on the exploration of Powell, Palmer and other sealers then in this area.
