Cartografiado por primera vez en 1936, aunque en forma aproximada, por la BGLE al mando de John Rymill. Fue levantado en 1947 por el FIDS, que lo denominó Surf Rock debido al ruido de la rompiente del oleaje (surf). Al mismo tiempo, la Expedición Antártica Chilena de 1947 lo denominó islote Barrera, por el apellido del profesor Humberto Barrera Valdebenito, glaciólogo de la Universidad de Chile y de la Universidad Católica de Chile, integrante de la expedición. Pequeño islote bajo, que se sitúa 0,5 milla al W del extremo W de la isla Neny y a 0,2 milla al SE del islote Orrego Vicuña, en la bahía Margarita, frente a la costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
