Cartografiado por el FIDS en 1946, que lo llamó Brown Bluff. El nombre actual corresponde al apellido del mayor Sebastián Carbonell Santander, integrante de la delegación del Ejército de Chile en la Expedición Antártica Chilena en 1946-1947. Cerro de cumbre plana y cubierta de hielo, de aproximadamente 744 metros de elevación, con un prominente tajo de roca volcánica marrón-rojiza sobre la cara N, ubicado a unas 9 millas al S de la bahía Hope, en el lado E de la península Tabarín, en NE de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
