El nombre corresponde al apellido del teniente Felipe Solo de Zaldívar, quien efectuó el primer levantamiento hidrográfico chileno de la ensenada y desembocadura del río Bueno, en diciembre de 1834, a bordo del bergantín de guerra "Aquiles" de la Armada de Chile, al mando del capitán de fragata Roberto Simpson. Es la península que separa a la bahía Bigo, por el N, de la bahía Barilari, por el S, y que termina en el cabo García, en la costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
