El nombre corresponde al apellido del teniente 2º Enrique Malfanti Pérez, oficial de la PF. "Baquedano" de la Armada de Chile, quien participó en un trascendental desembarco en la isla Pedro I durante la Expedición Antártica Chilena de 1956. Seno que se abre inmediatamente al NE de la punta extremo S de la isla Nansen, frente a la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
