Formerly a year-round station operated by South Africa opened in 1962: this was the second of three previous stations replaced by SANAE IV; the others were SANAE I (q.v.), and SANAE III (q.v.); the new station opened in 1997 approximately 200 km south of this original location - Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP), May 18, 2006.
