This name originates from Spain. It is part of the Spain Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
Pond 1175 m from Usnea Plug to the SW In Byers Peninsula, ì Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands. It is a pond of about ì 60 m diameter, of a round shape, with a maximum depth in ì mid-summer of 1m. The flat bottom is covered by cyanobacterial ì mats, and the perimeter is covered by a mix of cyanobacterial ì mats and mosses. The surface is at about 80 m above the sea ì level. Coordinates given from a GPS (7m accuracy). The name was ì given considering the shallowness of the pond (Somero means ì shallow in Spanish). It has been investigated as a case study ì representative of the ponds in the area. There is a nearby ì automatic weather station which has sensors in this pond, and ì collects data continuously. Numerous publications have already ì used Somero Pond as an unofficial name for this feature.
