Origin

This name originates from Spain. It is part of the Spain Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.

Narrative

It is a stream of about 1 km long and maximum depth of 40 cm, ì with a diffuse network upstream; approx 1000 m from Cerro Negro ì to the W In Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, South Shetland ì Islands. Cyanobacterial mats, mosses and green algal felts cover ì the margins and in the flat areas the stream bed. It runs from ì the plateau to the south beaches where it gets to the sea. ì Coordinates given from a GPS (7m accuracy). The name was given ì after the chironomid Belgica antartica because it is one of the ì very few sites in Byers Peninsula where this insect is found. It ì has been investigated by Spanish research projects because the ì presence of this chironomid as well as the other chironomid ì species Parochlus steinenni. Several publications have already ì used Belgica Stream as an unofficial name for this feature.
