Origin

This name originates from New Zealand. It is part of the New Zealand Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.

Narrative

An ice-free hill c.95m and approximately 1.7km long north to south, on the south-eastern side of Inexpressible Island, Terra Nova Bay, Victoria Land, Antarctica. Feature depicted on NZMS 166 SS58-60/9 and USGS Reconnaissance SS58-60/9 1:250k topographic maps.

Named For

Named by the NZGB for Dr David Harrowfield, who has worked in the Antarctic for over 40 years. Notably, Harrowfield worked in the fields of Antarctic archaeology and historical conservation, including inventories and preservation of historic exploration huts on Ross Island, and other other historic sites in the Ross Sea Region. Harrowfield is a former Antarctic Curator of Canterbury Museum. He has worked on the conservation of artefacts uplifted from Antarctic and Canterbury Museum’s Antarctic collection. Harrowfield is a regarded Antarctic authority with c.225 total publications including several Antarctic histories. Harrowfield received the Antarctic medal in 2009, and in 2017 Harrowfield was made a life member of the New Zealand Antarctic Society.
