Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) in 1993 after J. Robie Vestal (1942-92), microbiologist at the University of Cincinnati, 1983-92, chairman of the advisory committee to the Division of Polar Programs, National Science Foundation, 1990-91. His research in Antarctica focused on adaptations of microbial ecosystems to the extreme environments.
