This name originates from Bulgaria. It is part of the Bulgaria Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
The mostly ice-covered island 1.12 km long in SW-NE direction and 537 m wide in the Vedel Islands group of Wilhelm Archipelago in the Antarctic Peninsula region. Surface area 40.4 ha. Situated 3.77 km NW of Hovgaard Island, 50 m NW of Friedburginsel, 652 m ESE of Rak Island and 37 m S of Lapa Island.
So named because of its shape supposedly resembling a turtle ('kostenurka' in Bulgarian), and in association with other descriptive names of islands in the area.
