Named by United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) after John A. Heap, a member of the University of Michigan-Ross Ice Shelf Studies party, 1962-63, later with the Polar Regions Section of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, London. Mapped from air photographs taken by the US Navy.
