1979 place name minutes show "The name 'Gwamm' is made up of the initials of the wives and sweethearts of the officers and airmen of the 1958 RAAF Antarctic Flight. * The name was considered inappropriate because of its obscure and private orlgln. It was felt that the ice runway needs a name." The name wasn't approved. 1994 place name minutes show "There is a need for a name for the old airstrip on blue ice above Mawson. It was named in association with the RAAF Antarctic Flight and the name has been in continuous use since that time. The name was approved."
