A glacier occupying a deep depression, extending for 80 km inland from Buchanan Bay in George V Land and averaging over 32 km wide. Discovered by AAE (1911-14) under Sir Douglas Mawson, who named it after Dr Xavier Mertz, a member of the expedition who lost his life on the far-east sledge journey.
