Feature type: Ice shelf
This name originates from Australia. It is part of the Australian Antarctic Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
Names that other countries have for this feature:
A broad ice shelf at the head of a large embayment, consisting of Prydz Bay and MacKenzie Bay. A prominent point of the ice shelf was mapped by BANZARE (1929-31) on 11 February, 1931. Further exploration showed that Cape Amery had broken off and floated away, so the name Amery was applied to the whole ice shelf.
Named by Douglas Mawson in 1931 for Rt. Hon. Leopold S. Amery. Originally named Cape Amery to commemorate his assistance and help in connection with the organisation and dispatch of the B.A.N.Z. Antarctic Research Expedition.
