NE entrance point of Hughes Bay, dividing Davis Coast from Danco Coast, was roughly charted by Foster in January-February 1829, when the name Mount Herschel was applied to the later named Mount Pénaud (q.v.) to ESE of the cape, after Sir John Frederick William Herschel (1792-1871), British astronomer and member of the Royal Society Committee which prepared instructions for the voyage of Foster's ship HMS Chanticleer, 1828-31; son of Sir F.W. Herschel (Herschel Heights, q.v.); further charted by BeAE, 24 January 1898, when the name Cap von Sterneck was applied to Sterneck Island (q.v.) to S of the cape; further charted by SwAE in 1902 and erroneously called Kap von Steineck [sic] (Nordenskjöld and others, 1904b, Vol.2, p.115), Cape von Steineck (Nordenskjöld and others, 1905, p.402) or Kap Wennersgaard (Wennersgaard Point, q.v.) (K. Andersson, 1905, Karte 1 following p.58); erroneously called Cap Charles (Charles Point, q.v.) by FAE, 1908-10 (Charcot, 1912, Pl.1). Guvenor [sic] Point, probably after the whaling ship Gouvernøren I (Gouvernøren Harbour, q.v.) (Johannessen, chart, [1919-20]). A bold, black cliff on a projecting point of land forming the N side of the entrance to Hughes Bay, on the W coast of Antarctic Peninsula. In 1898, the BelgAE under Lt. Adrien de Gerlache explored this area and named this cape for the German geophysicist whose apparatus was used on the expedition.

La Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899, al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache, exploró esta zona en el año 1898 y le dio el nombre a este cabo por un geofísico alemán cuyos instrumentos fueron usados por la expedición. En algunas cartas antiguas se ha confundido este accidente con la punta Charles, que está 10 millas más al S, y ha figurado, traducido con el nombre cabo Carlos, hasta 1952. Está situado a 8,8 millas al WSW del cabo Karl Andreas, en el extremo de una península que se proyecta por 7 millas hacia el WNW costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. Es un morro notable de piedra desnuda de color negro, espaldeado por un cerro.
