SE entrance point of Scar Inlet, Oscar II Coast, following survey by FIDS from Hope Bay in 1961, was named after Sydney Chapman (1888-1970), Professor of Natural Philosophy, Oxford University, 1946-53; joint initiator with L.V. Berkner (Berkner Island, q.v.) of IGY; President, Commission for the IGY, 1958-59; Advisory Scientific Director, Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska, 1951-70 (APC, 1964, p.3; Soviet Union. GUGK map 221, 1973).
