WNW of Cape Lindsey, Elephant Island, with rocks awash, was roughly charted by Powell in 1822 and so named because it lies off the W entrance of Sealers Passage (Powell, chart, 1822a; SDUK, map, 1838; APC, 1974, p.7; DOS 610 sheet W 6154 (Ext.), 1-GSGS 1972). Récif West (d'Urville, 1838, map following p.1170). West Riff (Friederichsen, 1895, Tafel 7 facing p.304). The reef was photographed from the air by FIDASE, 1956-57.
