in Errera Channel, off Rongé Island, Danco Coast, was charted by BeAE, 3 February 1898 and named Île Cavelier du Cuverville after Vice-Am. Jean Marie Armand Cavelier de Cuverville (1834-1912), of the French Navy (Lecointe, map, 1899). I. Cavelier du Cuverville (Cook, 1900, map p.xx). Île Cavalier [sic] de Cuverville (Lecointe, 1900a, map facing p.132; Gerlache, 1902b, p.128). Isola Cavalier de Cuverville, Isola de Cuverville (Gerlache, 1902a). Dark, rocky island lying in Errera Channel between Arctowski Peninsula and the N part of Ronge Island, off the W coast of Graham Land. Discovered by the BelgAE under Gerlache, 1897-99, who named it for J.M.A. Cavelier de Cuverville (1834-1912), a vice admiral of the French Navy. |

Fue descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899, al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache, quien le dio el nombre por J.M.A. Cavelier de Cuverville, vicealmirante de la Armada Francesa. En algunas cartas chilenas de 1947 se aplicó este nombre erróneamente a la isla De Ronge. Isla constituida por roca oscura y que alcanza una altura de 252 metros, que está ubicada frente a la costa NE de la isla De Ronge y separada unos 3 cables de esta última, en el canal Errera, frente a la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. |
