Discovered on 18 February 1931, by BANZARE (1929-31) under Sir Douglas Mawson, who named it after W R Colbeck, second officer of the expedition ship, Discovery.

The most prominent peak in the central part of the Aramis Range, Prince Charles Mountains. It has an almost vertical face on the northern side. Shaped like a truncated pyramid, it is 4 km long in an east-west direction and 2 km north-south. Situated about 18 km SSE of Mt. McCarthy and discovered by the ANARE southern party led by W.G. Bewsher in December, 1956. Named after Gordon Abbs, radio operator at Mawson in 1956.
