rising to c. 1150m in NE Havre Mountains (q.v.), N Alexander Island, following survey by BAS from "Fossil Bluff", 1975-76, was named after John Newman (b. 1946), BAS Diesel mechanic, Adelaide, 1968-69, "Stonington Island", 1969-70 and 1972-74, who was instrumental in modifying BAS motor sledges, first used successfully as replacements for dog teams on this survey (APC, 1980, p.4).
