W of Stonington Island, Marguerite Bay, Fallières Coast, was surveyed by FIDS in 1947; named Bear Islet after USS Bear, of USAS, which visited the area in March 1940 (APC, 1955, p.5; BA chart 3213, 23.iii.1956). Bear Island (APC, 1959a, p.4; BA chart 3213, 12.viii.1960). Islote Bear (Chile. DNH, 1962, p.199; IHA, 1974, p.42). Islotes Bear, including offlying islands (Chile. IH chart 1604, 1969). Rocky island lying 1 mi W of Stonington Island in Marguerite Bay, off the coast of Graham Land. The island was presumably known to the BGLE, 1934-37, and the USAS, 1939-41, both based in the Stonington Island area. It was surveyed in 1947 by the FIDS, who named it for the USS Bear, flagship of the USAS which visited this area in 1940. |

Se presume que este islote fue conocido por la BGLE de 1934-1937, al mando de Rymill, y por el USAS de 1939-1941, al mando del almirante Byrd, ambos basados en el área del islote Stonington. Fue levantado por el FIDS en 1947, que le puso el nombre por el USS "Bear", buque insignia del USAS, que visitó esta área en 1940. La Expedición Antártica Chilena de 1947 fijó la posición de una isla pequeña aproximadamente en la misma posición del islote Bear y la llamó isla Tte. González, por el grado y apellido del teniente de Ejército Jorge González Baeza, integrante de la expedición. Este último nombre ha sido derogado. Islote rocoso ubicado al N de la isla Neny y a una milla al W del extremo occidental de la isla Stonington, bahía Margarita. |
