Su nombre corresponde a los apellidos de Pedro Aguirre Cerda, Presidente de la República de Chile, quien el 6 de noviembre de 1940 fijó por Decreto Supremo los límites definitivos del Territorio Chileno Antártico. El nombre fue puesto por la Expedición Antártica Chilena de 1950-1951. En algunas publicaciones figuró como canal A. Cerda. Canal que corre sobre la costa oriental de la isla Lemaire, entre ésta y el continente, en dirección general NNE-SSW y que constituye el acceso por el NE a bahía Paraíso, en la costa occidental de Tierra de O'Higgins. |

(Lester, 1920-22a, Vol. 2, p.12), or The Channel (Bagshawe, 1939, p.50); following CAE, 1950-51, named Canal Aguirre Cerda after Don Pedro Aguirre Cerda (1879-1941), President of Chile, 1938-41, who on 6 November 1940 decreed the limits of Territorio Chileno Antártico (Chile. DNH chart 511, 1951; IHA, 1974, p. 20). Pasaje Marinero [=mariners passage] after the sailors of Chiriguano during AAE, 1949-50 (Argentina. MM, 1953, p. 250a; Pierrou, 1970, p. 504). A marine channel between Lemaire Island and Danco Coast, permitting northern access to Paradise Harbor. The feature was navigated by the ship Belgica (BelgAE, 1897-99) and was known to Norwegian whalers in the area from 1913. Chilean Antarctic Expeditions operated a science station on Waterboat Point (q.v.) at Aguirre Passage from 1951-73. Named by the Chilean Antarctic Expedition, 1950-51, after Don Pedro Aguirre Cerda (1879-1941), President of Chile, 1938-41. |
