Fue descubierta y cartografiada por la Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899, al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache, quien le dio el nombre por Madame De Rongé, quien contribuyó a la expedición. En algunas cartas de 1947 se le aplicó erróneamente el nombre de isla Cuverville e isla Cuveiville. En otras cartas chilenas entre 1951 y 1957 se le llamó isla Ronge e isla De Ronge. Isla montañosa y maciza, que mide 5 millas de largo en sentido N-S por 2,5 de ancho medio y que alcanza una altura de 1.158 metros. Está situada frente a la península Arctowski y separada de esta por el canal Errera, frente a la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.

N of Beneden Head separated from Graham Coast by Errera Channel, was roughly charted by BeAE, 4-28 February 1898, and together with offlying islands named IÎles de Rongé after Mme de Rongé, a contributor to the expedition (Lecointe, map, 1899; 1900a, map facing p.132). Rouges [sic] Inseln, presumably in error (Stefan, 1900, map facing p.532). Rongé Islands (Cook, 1900, map p.xx). Cuverville Island (q.v.), in error (BA chart 3205, l.vi.1901; Herdman, 1932, chart 6). High, rugged island 5 mi long, the largest island of the group which forms the W side of Errera Channel, off the W coast of Graham Land. Discovered by the BelgAE, 1897-99, under Gerlache, who named it for Madame de Ronge, a contributor to the expedition.
