flowing E into S part of Seligman Inlet, Bowman Coast, was photographed from the air by USAS in 1940; surveyed from the ground by FIDS from Hope Bay and Stonington Island in 1947; in association with the names of other glaciologists in this area, named after Hans Wilhelmsson Ahlmann (1889-1974), Swedish glaciologist and geographer; Director and Professor, Geographical Institute, Stockholm University, 1929-50, who initiated the study of world climatology through the behaviour of glaciers; initiator and Swedish member of the board of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition, 1949-52 (BA chart 3570, 4.vi.1954; APC, 1955, p.4). Es el más austral de los glaciares que se encuentran en la ensenada Seligman. Fue fotografiado desde el aire en 1940 por una comisión de la E.S.A.E.U. que comandaba el almirante Byrd. El C.I.I.M. (F.I.D.S.) cartografió el accidente en 1947 y lo bautizó en honor del geólogo y glaciólogo suizo Hans W. Ahlmann. Figuró publicado por primera vez en la carta 110 de 1957 y en la TSAA1. Este glaciar fue fotografiado desde el aire en 1940 por el USAS y cartografiado en 1947 por el FIDS, que le dio el nombre por el Profesor Hans Wilhelmsson Ahlmann, glaciólogo y geógrafo sueco. Es el más al S de los dos glaciares que, separados por el cabo Church, fluyen en dirección al E hacia ensenada Seligman, en la costa E de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. |

An embayment about 170 km wide, between Cape Morse and Cape Goodenough, on the eastern end of Banzare Coast, in Wilkes Land. The name Porpoise Bay was applied by Wilkes to a large bay in 66 degrees S., 130 degrees E. after the brig Porpoise of the US Exploring Expedition (1838-42). The present bay was delineated from air photography taken by USN Operation Highjump (1946-47) and named Porpoise Bay by USACAN. |
