SCAR Gazetteer Information: Each place can have one or more entries in the SCAR Composite Gazetteer, dependant on its origin. By viewing an individual entry, you may see multiple references to the same place. SCAR uses a more general feature type coding, so each place will, in general, have multiple feature types.

rising to c. 150m on N side of Snow Hill Island, were surveyed by SwAE in 1902-03 and called from their position on the island Mittelnunatak [=middle nunatak] (Nordenskjöld, 1911b, Karte 3); resurveyed by FIDS from "Hope Bay" in September 1952 and named Sanctuary Cliffs, because they face N into the sun and provide shelter from the prevailing SW winds (APC, 1958, p.6; DOS 610 sheet W6456, 1961). Middle Nunatak (Howarth, 1958, p.8). |

Name ID: 131168

Rock cliffs at the N edge of the ice cap which covers the central part of Snow Hill Island, James Ross Island group. First seen and surveyed by the SwedAE, 1901-04, under Nordenskjold. They gave the name "Mittelnunatak," presumably because of their position near the middle of the north coast of the island. Following survey by FIDS in 1952, it was reported that the term "cliffs" is more suitable than "nunatak" for this feature. Since the word "Middle" has been accepted in several other Antarctic names, the UK-APC recommended an entirely new and more distinctive name be approved. Sanctuary Cliffs is descriptive of the aspect of these cliffs which face into the sun and provide shelter from the prevailing southwesterly winds. |
