The largest of the Balleny Islands, about 27 miles long and 8 miles wide. It is the south-eastern island of the group and rises at Brown Peak to a height of 1524m. The cliffs are rocky and steep, and there are broad ice-tongues reaching to the coast. Discovered on 9 February 1839 by Balleny , and named by him for T Sturge, one of the seven London merchants who assisted Charles Enderby in sending out the expedition. |

An island about 20 mi long and 4 mi wide which is the largest and southernmost of the Balleny Islands. Discovered in Feb. 1839 by John Balleny, captain of the schooner Eliza Scott, who named it for T. Sturge, one of the merchants who united with Charles Enderby in sending out the expedition. |
