nearly covering Wilkins Sound (q.v.) and extending E into Haydn Inlet and Schubert Inlet, W Alexander Island, was photographed from the air by RARE in 1947. Wilkins Shelfeis (Kosack, 1955a, p.228). The ice shelf was mapped from air photographs by FIDS in 1959 (BAS 610 sheets W 6970 and 7070, 1960; Searle, 1963, end map). Shel'fovyy Lednik Uilkins (Soviet Union. MMF chart, 1961). A rectangular ice shelf about 80 miles long and 60 miles wide. The feature occupies the central part of Wilkins Sound, from which it takes its name. The name was proposed by the UK-APC in 1971. |
