W entrance point of Potter Cove, King George Island, was known to nineteenth-century sealers; charted by DI, 1934-35; photographed from the air by FIDASE, 1956-57, and surveyed from the ground by FIDS, 1957-59; in association with the names of sealers in this area, named after Capt. Jonathan Winship, Master of the sealing ship O'Cain (O'Cain Point, q.v.), who visited the South Shetland Islands, 1820-21, in company with the sealing ship Stranger (Stranger Point q.v.), and operated from Potter Cove; he made a collection of rock specimens (APC, 1960, p.8; BA chart 1774, 14.ix.1962).
