A low headland, 34m, that marks the north entrance point to Horseshoe Bay in W Ross Island. Named by NZGB after Technical Services Officer Garth Edwin Varcoe, helicopter pilot, who worked in the NZ Antarctic Programme over a period of 15 years until his accidental death in a helipcopter crash near this headland in October 1992. His expertise was in the mechanical and electrical areas and he played a leading role in the reconstruction of Scott Base. The feature had been unofficially named Varcoe Headland since the accident. Note that Varcoe Headland is not the same feature as Rocky Point. Refer to an email from the US of 2/12/1999 which confirms that ACAN accepts this name. |
