Subglacial lake that lies under the South Pole Station Vostok. It is approximately 280 km long from North to South and over 50 km wide. Maximum depth 1200 m; depth in the area of of the Vostok Station, 680 m; depth in the northern part 200-4000 m. Located at 1160 km north of Mirny Station.

A subglacial lake at the base of the East Antarctica ice sheet near the Pole of Inaccessability. The lake is estimated to be of 140 by 30 mi extent and of 500 m depth in the deepest S portion. Seismic soundings and echo soundings indicate the lake is 2.3 to 2.6 mi beneath the ice surface at various points of its length. The name derives from the Russian Vostok research station located above the S part of the lake.
