separating South Shetland Islands from Trinity Peninsula and the Joinville Island group, was discovered but thought to be a gulf in January 1820 by Edward Bransfield, Master, RN (1785-1852), commanding HM hired brig Williams for her Antarctic voyage of 1819-20 to survey the South Shetland Islands; discoverer of Trinity Peninsula, the first part of continental Antarctica to be seen by man (Bransfield, chart, [1820b]); subsequently charted by early sealers. Christmas Sound, believed to refer to this feature in the log of the American sloop Hero (Capt. Nathaniel B. Palmer), 1820-21 (Hobbs, 1939a, p.41). La Expedición Británica cazadora de focas de 1822-1824, al mando del maestre James Weddell, RN, le puso el nombre, que apareció en las narraciones del viaje, incluyendo un mapa de las islas Shetland del Sur, que fueron publicadas en 1825. El nombre corresponde al apellido del maestre Edward Bransfield, RN, que dirigió la Expedición Británica cazadora de focas entre 1819-1820. Masa de agua de unas 240 millas de largo por 60 de ancho medio, en dirección general ENE-WSW, que separa a las islas Shetland del Sur de la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. Se abre por el oriente entre las islas Clarence y Joinville, por el occidente entre las islas Smith y Brabante.
