Three roughly parallel ridges running approximately north-east to south-west with their north-easterly extremities terminating at Matusevich Glacier, Oates Land. Sketched and photographed on 20 February, 1959, by Phillip Law, leader of the ANARE on MV Magga Dan. Named after Lieut. Cmdr. I M Burnside, RAN, hydrographic surveyor on the MV Magga Dan during the voyage.

El nombre se viene empleando desde 1930 y su uso se ha establecido internacionalmente. La Expedición Antártica Chilena de 1947, al mando del comandante y capitán de navío Federico Guesalaga Toro, que efectuó un completo levantamiento de bahía Chile, aplicó para este accidente el nombre punta Cap. Del Canto, Ingeniero de la PF. "Iquique", buque integrante de la expedición. En una carta de 1951 figuró como punta Del Canto. Estos dos últimos nombres han sido derogados. Punta que constituye el límite NW de la entrada de bahía Chile, en la costa N de la isla Greenwich, islas Shetland del Sur.
