forming W entrance of Leroux Bay, Graham Coast, was charted by FAE, 1908-10, and named Île Chavez after Cmdte Alfonso Chaves [sic], who assisted the expedition at Punta Delgada, Azores, in 1910 (Charcot, 1910, p.366; 1912, Pl. 1). Île Chaves (Bongrain, 1914, p.38). Île Lippmann, in error (Lippmann Islands, q.v.) (Bongrain, 1914, vue 18 following p.60). Island 3 mi long which rises to 550 m, lying immediately W of the peninsula between Leroux and Bigo Bays, off the W coast of Graham Land. Discovered and named by the FrAE, 1908-10, under Charcot, probably for Commandant Alfonso Chaves of Ponta Delgada, Azores, but the spelling Chavez has become established through long usage. |

Fue descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Francesa de 1908-1910, al mando del Dr. Jean B. Charcot, quien le dio el nombre, probablemente por el comandante Alfonso Chávez de Ponta Delgada, Azores. El nombre Chávez ha sido establecido, en reemplazo de Chaves, por el uso. Isla de unas 3,3 millas de largo y de 670 metros de altura que está situada al W de la península que separa bahía Bigo de bahía Leroux, en la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. |
