COMPOSITE GAZETTEER OF ANTARCTICA

one of the Melchior Islands (q.v.), Palmer Archipelago, was charted by DI in 1927 and named after the first letter in the Greek alphabet, in association with the names of other islands in this group (BA chart 3213, 14.i.1929; APC, 1955, p.4; BA chart 3213, 12.viii. 1960); recharted by AAE, 1942-43. Isla Alfa (Chile. DNH chart 510, 1947). Isla Alpha (Vila Labra, 1947, p.120; Chile. IHA, 1974, p.26). Isla Huidobro, after Ruiz Pascual Huidobro (d. 1813), an officer in the Spanish Army, who supported the liberation movement in Argentina (Argentina. MM, 1953, p.278; Pierrou, 1970, p.433-34). Isla Huidodro [sic] (Argentina. MM, 1957a, p.131).

Small island lying between Epsilon Island and Delta Island in the Melchior Islands, Palmer Archipelago. Charted by DI in 1927 and named after the first letter of the Greek alphabet, in association with the names of other islands in this group. The island was surveyed by Argentine expeditions in 1942, 1943 and 1948.

El nombre Alpha corresponde a la primera letra del alfabeto Griego y, probablemente, fue colocado por la Investigación Discovery, al mando del Dr. Stanley Kemp, que en 1927 efectuó un levantamiento aproximado de esta isla. Isla situada a 2 cables al W de la punta Bills de la isla Delta y al oriente de la isla Épsilon y de la isla Beta, en el archipiélago Melchior.
