rising to 450m in NE entrance of Admiralty Sound, was charted by Ross, 1 January 1843, and named after Adm. of the Fleet Sir George Cockburn, RN (1772-1853), Commander-in-Chief, North America and West India Station, 1832-36; First Naval Lord of the Admiralty, 1841-46 (BA chart 1238, 1844; APC, 1955, p.7; BA chart 3205, 25.iii.1937; BAS 250 sheet SQ 21-22/1 (Ext.), 1-DOS 1974). Ross landed on the island and took formal possession for Queen Victoria, 6 January 1843 (Ross, 1847a, Vol. 2, p.335). Cockburn Insel (Friederichsen, 1895, Tafel 7 facing p.304). Circular island 1 mi in diameter, consisting of a high plateau with steep slopes surmounted on the NW side by a pyramidal peak 450 m high, lying in the NE entrance to Admiralty Sound, S of the NE end of Antarctic Peninsula. Discovered by a British expedition under Ross, 1839-43, who named it for Admiral George Cockburn, RN, then Senior Naval Lord of the Admiralty.

Fue descubierta por la Expedición Británica de 1839-1843, al mando del capitán James Clark Ross, quien le dio el nombre por el almirante George Cockburn, RN., quien posteriormente en 1851, fue almirante de la flota. Isla situada en la boca oriental del paso Almirantazgo, a 6 millas al ESE del cabo Gage, extremo oriental de la isla Ross, la cual está ubicada frente a la costa oriental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
